Less then we would have liked but the smaller number of riders made for a great couple of days riding. The trails were well received, especially the new section which was the first time it had been ridden by anyone but Toni, myself and Henry.<br />

Due to the rain event on the weekend of the 4/5 October we rescheduled the GRIN for 24/25 November</h3>
<br />
Well.......do we have a treat for you!<br />
<br />
<br />
Working with the team from <a href="http://whitelightningevents.com/" target="_blank">White Lightning Events</a> we have organised Nymboida's first MTB multi day event, <a href="https://m.facebook.com/events/689066288140835?view=permalink&id=694055340975263" target="_blank">The GRIN</a> (Great Race in Nymboida). It's a two day event, starting Saturday afternoon with racing and festivities at the Nymboida MTB Trails and then we'll have a get together at the <a href="http://nymboidacanoecentre.com/" target="_blank">Nymboida Camping and Canoeing</a>. So make sure you book accommodation, you will need to supply your own meals on Saturday BUT the Nymboida RFS will be having a fund raising bacon and egg breakfast and lunch at the event on the 25th, so make sure you support the RFS, as they do awesome work in the local community. <br />
<br />
The event will be 2 x 4hr MTB race, teams or solo spread across the afternoon of Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th November. Each day will be a different course to add interest and best of all......it's all awesome, hand built single track nirvana, no fire road at all!<br />
<br />
You can register for the event via <a href="https://online.mtba.asn.au/ERegister.aspx?E=5895" target="_blank">this link</a><br />
<br />
<b>Mhoarrrrr Single Track !</b><br />
<b></b><br />
While <i>White Lightning Events</i> have been doing their thing on the prodigious administration involved in getting the event up and running Toni, Mark, Henry and I have been super busy building new trail. We wanted to get this new track ready especially for the event and have been doing 3 or 4 trailworking bees every week for the last several weeks as well as months worth of work prior to that!<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">New bridge leading onto hand cut single track...</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
The new trail hasn't even been ridden by many riders yet, so I would suggest everyone ensure they do a test ride of the trail BEFORE the race event (get here early and head out !). The trail is built using the 'stacked loop' system recommended by the <a href="https://www.imba.com/" target="_blank">IMBA </a>, where the trails are more difficult the further you are from the car park of the bike park.<br />
<br />
There are some really awesome features that might be tricky for beginner riders. It's not that they are particularly hard but if it's your first time out, they might catch you by surprise and add a "pucker" factor in the first lap that you don't need when racing. For all but one obstacle on the new trail, there are no B lines, it's called Taipan for a reason, it can bite and will hurt if you don't respect it.<br />
<br />

<b>Thanks to those who came out</b></h4>
A special thanks to the locals from Nymboida, for such a small community we pulled together a great showing. From the many and varied Sage's, the Broderick's and a variety of Ramose's, as well as Toni and myself but also thanks to everyone from far and wide who came out for the day from all across the Clarence Valley and further afield in Coffs Harbour.<br />

<br />
The tracks were in superb condition, no dust and were nicely bedded in with the 5mm from the day before.<br />

<br /></h3>
after a long hiatus, we've started building trail again. We've enlisted the help of anther young local MTB enthusiast,. Oliver has been up helping us and learning how to build trail. He's also keen on building his own trail on his property, hopefully he'll learn from my mistakes and not repeat them at his place<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://trevors.smugmug.com/MTB-Trails/Nymboida/2015/i-frpdZmg/0/X2/PB170008-X2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://trevors.smugmug.com/MTB-Trails/Nymboida/2015/i-frpdZmg/0/X2/PB170008-X2.jpg" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Oliver striking a pose beside the new trail</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
Here's the start of the alignment for the new trail. <br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://trevors.smugmug.com/MTB-Trails/Nymboida/2015/i-GgPwN4s/0/X2/PB030002-X2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://trevors.smugmug.com/MTB-Trails/Nymboida/2015/i-GgPwN4s/0/X2/PB030002-X2.jpg" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Before any trail work started<br /></td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://trevors.smugmug.com/MTB-Trails/Nymboida/2015/i-wrNhrBM/0/X2/PB170005-X2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://trevors.smugmug.com/MTB-Trails/Nymboida/2015/i-wrNhrBM/0/X2/PB170005-X2.jpg" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Lookin' good !</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
It uses part of what I think is an old logging track that's about 40 years overgrown, albeit it's turned into more a drain over the decades but it ends up in a nce grove near the base of a cliff. <br />
<br />
<br />
From there we'll create a hub and send trail in all different directions from there. That's when the real hard work starts..<br />

</div>
<div>
This is the weekend of the Nymboida Adventure Festival being held at the Nymboida Canoe Centre, make a great weekend of it, come out Saturday and stay the night. Rooms are available, make sure you ring the Centre on 6649 4155 to book a room. There's also great camping, with hot showers, cooking facilities and BBQ's available<br />

<h3>
What next ?</h3>
<div>
Good question.. We are currently debating two extensions to the new trail to complete it. Currently it hooks onto Red Ridin' Hood and doesn't comply with the IMBA spoke and hub trail concept that we like to follow. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We can have a smaller track that links in with the northern part of the trail network at Legbone/Toebone trail hub or we can loop right around up near the Nymboida State Forest and join up with the Footbone/Legbone Trail hub at the top. The former would be a 2 to 3 month project, the latter would take at least a year and probably longer but would definitely be a long sweet ride :) </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
What to do? We're not sure yet, until then we'll just enjoy riding the trails we do have :)</div>

Nymboida local Clayton has been helping out on the trails lately. Clayton and his brother Sebastian both enjoy riding them so why not help us build new stuff ? Few hands making lighter work 'n all. <h2>
Jack 'n Jill !</h2>
We have started building the new trail, tentatively named "Jack 'n Jill", as Phase II (we are currently working on Phase I) requires you to go up the hill, albeit no pail of water at the top... who puts a well at the top of a hill anyway ? The name also fits in with the nursery rhyme theme for the trails on the southside of the property.<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">(L)Toni - (R) Clayton</td></tr>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Clayton Young made a brief appearance to learn the skilled art of "finishing" the trail, taught by the zen trail finishing master, Toni,. He seemed amazed at the amount of work that was put into a trail, always wanting to take the "easier" path or just "scratch 'n ride"... au contraire, the trails should be there for a long time and will be ridden often so the last thing you want to do is make them "ordinary".<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://trevors.smugmug.com/MTB-Trails/2013/Nymboida/i-j53nLhn/0/X2/PB260041-X2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://trevors.smugmug.com/MTB-Trails/2013/Nymboida/i-j53nLhn/0/X2/PB260041-X2.jpg" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The trail progresses</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<h3>
Phase I, II and III</h3>
Jack 'n Jill Phase I has been roughed out 98% (one corner to go), the build is well under way and finishes with an access to Glenns Ck Rd. The trail corridor for Phase II has been selected. This part of the trail involves a long climb on a hand built, rolling contour trail ie LOTS of benching and terminates at a temporary connection to Red Riding Hood. Phase III has yet to be decided !<br />
<br />
<h2>
Toe Bone - Maintenance</h2>
One of the sins I committed when first building was to build a structure that relied on the fasteners for it's strength. This is verboten under IMBA trail building rules to which we are trying to stick to, the years also showed why. The decking started to come off. So out we went to redo it properly. We felled timber for the decking by using coppicing of local timber right beside the structure, we debarked then left them for several weeks to "cure". <br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://trevors.smugmug.com/MTB-Trails/2013/Nymboida/i-ZJPk8z6/0/X2/PA290003-X2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://trevors.smugmug.com/MTB-Trails/2013/Nymboida/i-ZJPk8z6/0/X2/PA290003-X2.jpg" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">New stringers curing and decking being detached</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
To fix the problem we had to pull up all the decking, lay stringers beside the current ones, using an Adze to smooth out the difference in the stringers and then reattach the decking. <br />
<br />

Build it properly the first time and maintenance is kept to a minimum.<br />
<br />
We have been putting most of our effort into clearing lantana. We have put in a huge effort this year, as we've had a wet (easy to pull out of the ground), cool (makes it a little more pleasant to do the hard work) winter. While there is not much impact on the trail itself, aside from keeping the lantana from encroaching on the trail corridor, it makes the ride nicer as you can see the forest where it is the lantana was dense. We think we've put in a great effort, plenty more to go of course !<br />
<br />
<h2>
New Track (name to be decided by Toni)</h2>
I have spent some time scouting out the new trail to be added to the southern section. Finally have it marked. <br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://trevors.smugmug.com/MTB-Trails/2013/Nymboida/i-rNmZVS9/0/L/P7260001-L.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://trevors.smugmug.com/MTB-Trails/2013/Nymboida/i-rNmZVS9/0/L/P7260001-L.jpg" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">trail head for new trail</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
You can see from the photo above why we need to spend some time clearing lantana :)<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://trevors.smugmug.com/MTB-Trails/2013/Nymboida/i-Tc3vKbT/0/L/P7260003-L.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://trevors.smugmug.com/MTB-Trails/2013/Nymboida/i-Tc3vKbT/0/L/P7260003-L.jpg" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Trail corridor cleared and marked</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<h2>
Red Riding Hood</h2>
<div>
Following the "nursery rhyme" trail naming theme for the southern trail network, we have taken the plunge and called Steve's track that he had unofficially named Grass Tree Ride to Red Riding Hood. Two reasons</div>
<div>
<ol>
<li>Fit in with the Nursery Rhyme naming convention</li>
<li>that name specifically because of two gnarly structures; the "big bad wolf" ie huge see-saw that will bite your arse if you don;t pay attention and "grandma's house", some "north shore" way up in the trees :)</li>
</ol>
<div>
In order to fit into the hub and spoke model of trail building we also need to extend it slightly to meet up at the Dam Spillway Trail Hub. If we don't we fall into the newbie trail building trap of the trails looking like a bunch of spaghetti has been thrown on the ground. There will be four tracks meeting at the Hub point. Goldilocks, Red Riding Hood (after the extension) , the bit to Glenns Ck Rd and the new as yet unnamed climbing trail. </div>

As everyone in the local area will know we had plenty if rain on Wednesday night. I was initially quite hopeful the trails would have dried out by now but unfortunately after an inspection late this morning they are still too wet unfortunately.<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Bridge washed away in the floods</td></tr>

<br />
A friend (Phil) was visiting not long after, so he lent his brute strength to disassembling the bridge and dragging it the 50m back up the creek to put it back in place<br />

The trails all need a rake over, fallen trees need chainsawing and clearing and there is more lantana that has encroached on the trail corridor that needs pulling. Another week of dry weather and we may be able to ride them again. they are still soggy in places !!!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-57275850977109174.post-59896866770166401152013-03-30T01:06:00.000-07:002013-04-27T01:06:59.555-07:00Skills Park<h3>
Skills Park</h3>
<br />
Well, Steve has done a great job on starting the skills park. Currently there is currently a circuit allowing you to circle round, practicing lots of different MTB skills that can be used later on the trails. <br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://trevors.smugmug.com/MTB-Trails/2012/Nymboida/i-g8fCVd2/0/M/_SAM0121-M.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="265" src="http://trevors.smugmug.com/MTB-Trails/2012/Nymboida/i-g8fCVd2/0/M/_SAM0121-M.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Overview - burning pile of branches in the middle for marshmallows on a cold night !</td></tr>

<br />
<br />
Up and over the the chimmneys,<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://trevors.smugmug.com/MTB-Trails/2012/Nymboida/i-vGWtMnd/0/M/_SAM0123-M.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://trevors.smugmug.com/MTB-Trails/2012/Nymboida/i-vGWtMnd/0/M/_SAM0123-M.jpg" width="266" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
you can see why it;s called that when you look from the side !<br />

then across the ladder bridge, with a tricky little right hand turn and drop off for the truly skilled !<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Ladder bridge</td></tr>

<br />
Then a right turn and over the log ride<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Log ride</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
The log is shaped with an adze, the shingles we hand cut before I left for Cambodia from another log.<br />
<br />
From there you can go straight ahead on to "Goldilocks" and ride the southern trail loop or turn right and do the rock garden<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://trevors.smugmug.com/MTB-Trails/2012/Nymboida/i-Kw9P7Qc/0/M/_SAM0124-M.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://trevors.smugmug.com/MTB-Trails/2012/Nymboida/i-Kw9P7Qc/0/M/_SAM0124-M.jpg" width="213" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
You then loop back around and back to the start at "The Chimneys"<br />

We managed to get the <i>Mossy Log Ride</i> finished, it's "B" line and the B line for the Grizzly Bear obstacle as well as the rest of the trail benched. <br />
<br />
The Mossy Log Ride is, we think, another sweet obstacle on our trails, the log was quite hollow, so I used rocks to fill the void, and we used rock for the sides of the ramps. The ramps were subsequently filled with rock and the tops "shaped" with dirt.<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://trevors.smugmug.com/MTB-Trails/2011/Nymboida/i-CdW3ZPV/0/L/IMGP0019-L.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://trevors.smugmug.com/MTB-Trails/2011/Nymboida/i-CdW3ZPV/0/L/IMGP0019-L.jpg" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Log ride, hollow end, looking E to W</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
The log required a fair amount of rock inside to both fill it and offer support from the weight of the riders, it should last man many years, hopefully. I had done 90% of the western ramp a earlier in the week,<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://trevors.smugmug.com/MTB-Trails/2011/Nymboida/i-Q7kkZXN/0/L/IMGP0050-L.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://trevors.smugmug.com/MTB-Trails/2011/Nymboida/i-Q7kkZXN/0/L/IMGP0050-L.jpg" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Started earlier in the week, W ramp partly completed.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
so we just needed to finish that little bit off, then start the eastern ramp, plenty of rock close by made the job easier then just trying to use dirt or cart rock in from afar.<br />
<br />
When using dirt fill laid on rock, it's important to tamp the dirt down between the rocks to ensure there is minimal or preferably no subsidence as time goes on.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://trevors.smugmug.com/MTB-Trails/2011/Nymboida/i-zbmxSFf/0/L/IMGP0052-L.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="393" src="http://trevors.smugmug.com/MTB-Trails/2011/Nymboida/i-zbmxSFf/0/L/IMGP0052-L.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Completed Mossy Log Ride !</td></tr>

<br />
We used dirt from cutting the benches for the trail surface, cut and fill is always the most economical method if it can be used.<br />
<br />

but it needed a bit of moisture to allow me to pack it down nicely, low and behold the "God of Trail Building" gave me 20mm the next day. That worked a treat ! Now I just need another 10- 20mm or so to settle the new construction... send 'er down !<br />

The other day involved clearing the trail and getting it ready to finalise. Plenty of clearing to do but it is coming along nicely<br />

<br />
We accomplished a fair bit today but never enough in my eyes ! We started on "Grizzly Bear", Toni has named this obstacle as it has a nasty bite if you make a mistake ! This is what it looked like before we got going<br />

<br />
We need the chainsaw to cut a flat bit into the top of the log and to cut up the dead logs all around it to use in the construction of the ramps to get over !<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

and then we came back out after lunch to finish it, SWEET !<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">All finished, looking East to West</td></tr>

<br />
To celebrate, we decided to keep going and do a whole heap of benching<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://trevors.smugmug.com/MTB-Trails/2011/Nymboida/i-hW4TsZ4/0/L/IMGP0040-L.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://trevors.smugmug.com/MTB-Trails/2011/Nymboida/i-hW4TsZ4/0/L/IMGP0040-L.jpg" width="300" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Plenty of benching with this steeper side slope<br />
all full bench, half bench is half baked !</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
up to the next obstacle. The "Mossy Long Ride of D'eath !" Hopefully we'll get back to that some time next week, it and the berm on the corner are the last two obstacles to be constructed. Although we are considering adding something (who knows ?) further back to enhance the flavour of the trail !<br />
<br />
Still plenty of track to clear though but it's fairly flat so no benching needed !<br />
